According to this interpretation, formal ontology is formal in the sense used by Husserl in his Logical Investigations. Being ‘formal’ in such a sense therefore means dealing with categories like thing, process, Basic Formal Ontology BFO grows out of a philosophical orientation which overlaps with that of DOLCE and SUMO. Unlike these, however, it is narrowly focused on the task of providing a genuine upper ontology which can be used in support of domain ontologies developed for scientific research, as for example in biomedicine within the framework of the OBO Foundry.

Philosophy Program at the University at Buffalo with a Focus in Ontology Keywords: ontology, mereology, axiomatisation 1 Introduction Developed at the Institute for Formal Ontology and Medical Information Science, Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) is a theory of the basic structures of reality. BFO endorses the view that the world contains occur-rents and continuants. Occurrents are entities which unfold, or develop in time. It presents the core features of the Basic Formal Ontology (BFO), now used by over one hundred ontology projects around the world, and offers examples of domain ontologies that utilize BFO. The book also describes Web Ontology Language (OWL), a common framework for Semantic Web technologies.
Basic Formal Ontology is currently being used by over 100 ontology-based research projects in biomedical informatics and ABSTRACT.

These "starting points" (called "Upper Ontologies" or "Top Level Ontologies") vary in the way they choose to logically separate the world, and can vary hugely in their complexity. Numerous research groups are now utilizing Basic Formal Ontology (BFO) as an upper-level framework to assist in the organization and integration of biomedical information.
